2009 The team at the Flerov laboratory of nuclear reactions has begun an experiment to synthesize element 117.
The name was adopted by IUPAC on 8 June 2016.
After Tennessee, where Oak Ridge is located. Until 2016: ununseptium = 1-1-7-ium (IUPAC systematic element name)

History & Etymology

The team at the Flerov laboratory of nuclear reactions has begun an experiment to synthesize element 117.

The team at the GSI in Darmstadt, recently acknowledged as the discoverers of element 112 (see ununbium) have begun experiments aiming towards a synthesis of element 117. The GSI have indicated that if they are unable to acquire any 249Bk from the United States, which is likely given the situation regarding the attempt in Russia, they will study the reaction 244Pu(51V,xn) instead, or possibly 243Am(50Ti,xn).

The element has got the preliminary systematic IUPAC name Ununseptium.

The Name Tennessine (Ts) was disclosed in 2016 for public review.

For the element with atomic number 115 the name proposed is moscovium with the symbol Mc and for element with atomic number 117, the name proposed is tennessine with the symbol Ts. These are in line with tradition honoring a place or geographical region and are proposed jointly by the discoverers at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna (Russia), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (USA), Vanderbilt University (USA) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (USA).
Tennessine is in recognition of the contribution of the Tennessee region, including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, to superheavy element research, including the production and chemical separation of unique actinide target materials for superheavy element synthesis at ORNLís High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (REDC).
